1 / Learn
Four Forces and Drag
In steady flight the opposing forces cancel, so the airplane does not speed up or slow down.
- Lift: acts perpendicular to the flight path through the center of lift; opposes weight.
- Weight: pulls straight down through the center of gravity (CG).
- Thrust: forward force from the engine and propeller; opposes drag.
- Drag: rearward force. Parasite drag grows with airspeed; induced drag, a by-product of making lift, is greatest at low airspeed and high angle of attack.
2 / Check your understanding
In steady, unaccelerated flight, which statement about the four forces is true?
3 / Recall it
Which drag rises with airspeed, and which falls?
Show answer
Parasite drag rises with airspeed. Induced drag falls with airspeed (it is greatest at low speed and high AOA).
